Chronic Pain Relief

The Myths

The first one is my favorite. "It's all in your head...."Myth # 1!!

Well, no it isn't.

If it were all in your head, you would slip up sometime and forget the pain was there. Chronic pain is not in your head unless you suffer from chronic headaches, otherwise NOPE. Sorry, that isn't the case.

Finding chronic pain relief, to non sufferers, can't be understood. You are expected to act as though you are cured once the physical effects are unseen.

There again, outsiders can't feel what you do. So many in our families don't realize what it takes just to get through the day. The medications, the rest needed to function, the depression or dealing with disbelief that these aren't important.

So many of us catch flack for needing to take medications for pain.

Our families are worried that we are or will become addicted. It is very rarely that someone with chronic pain to become addicted. Usually this is from taking the medications incorrectly.

I know, this is one of the most hurtful things you face. Some people only need a small amount of medication to keep their pain in control and others need much more. No matter what the amount, you are taking the responsibility of controlling you life.

Finding chronic pain relief is the number one thing you should be concerned about. Family, friends and others should respect you for that. They wouldn't like going to the doctor all the time and worrying about if they can get their medication refilled or not. This is so important for us to be able to live a "normal life". Some of the myths I have come across are...

  • You are always feeling bad.
  • No one can bed as bad as you say you are.
  • I should look miserable so people know I am in pain.
  • You must enjoy this pain so people will notice you.
  • "How come you don't laugh anymore, Oh I forgot your in pain".
  • You can't work anymore, so what do you do with all your time?
  • You look fine, how can you have chronic pain.
Please people, we are still very much alive. We just have to adjust how we live our lives. We can still love, laugh, enjoy good times and bad and continue to search for chronic pain relief.

Some other myths are...

  • You can't do that, your in pain.
  • You must enjoy having an everlasting holiday from work.
  • You must be earning a gold mile from your disability pay.
  • You can't hurt that bad. You need to push through the pain.
  • If you can work doing that today, why don't you get a job.

Well, on good days you could get a job. But what happens when the pain kicks in and you are unable to function for a week or two, then where does that job go? Down the tubes.

This is one of the things that make people with chronic pain so furious. If, I could work, do you think I would be here. I would give anything to go back to work.

I have an idea.... Ask them to trade places with you, pain and all. You will work their job for a while and they can take a holiday. What!!! No takers. I thought so.

So, for those non-believers out there, step into my Rub-a-dub-dub boat and I will gladly step out.
