Coping With Chronic Pain
Coping with chronic pain is the ultimate challenge. Some days you will question yourself "Will this will ever happen for me"? Learning to cope with your chronic pain is one of the many steps towards recovery. It sure won't be easy but you can do it.
How am I going to do that? Take chronic pain coping one day at a time.
This isn't something that happens right away. You have to learn what you can do and what you can't do any more. First, you have to learn everything you can about your illness or injury. Understand the pain, per say. Then there are the adjustments, like regulating your medications, learning what your limits are and so on.
You have to accept chronic pain is now a part of your life and that it will never go away. You may feel like that will be impossible. But it isn't. Just take it one day at a time. Learn to block out the pain as best as you can. On the days you are feeling under control, get something accomplished. Feeling good about
accomplishments are rewarding
for anyone especially someone in constant unrelenting pain. Starting with small things is a good place to begin. Like getting dressed in the morning or even having coffee at the kitchen table. Small rewards can lead to larger ones in time. You also need to pace yourself with your activities. Listen to your body. Overdoing it all at once will make the pain worse. Resting is still very important, just remember that. If you let it, the pain will take over your life. Don't beat yourself up. I myself tend to get into moods where I get very angry with myself and its then I have to remember it is not my fault. When times get tough, take it easy. But, when you are feeling better, do something that you used to do before chronic pain became your life. Get involved in something that will distract you from your pain. Something you enjoy. At this point, the pain will have a hard time getting through and will help you relax and relieve some stress. It's sort of like a mental block that won't allow the pain to surface it's ugly head. There are also other choices you can make. Whether you want to be miserable or happy. A positive attitude is very important. I remember as a child saying I can't and being told if only you would try we would see if you can or not. So, don't feel like you can't cope with chronic pain, give it a try and prove to yourself you can.
Coping with Chronic Pain Tips: Try not to let your pain run your life. You are stronger than that. Get yourself on a schedule and stay with it. Block out the pain on good days and deal with it on bad ones. Accept small rewards and your achievements. This gives you satisfaction. Be determined to beat the beast called chronic pain. Your family and friends will have more respect for your commitment to living.
By being grumpy, grouchy, whining, having self pity isn't coping with chronic pain. A time will come that you will tire of this and a new you will emerge. Just like a butterfly breaking free of it's cocoon.
Learning to cope with chronic pain will bring back independence for you. Your mind will settle and soon life will become manageable. This will bring satisfaction to others around you. They know you still have chronic pain but you are learning to cope with it and manage it all at the same time.
