Chronic pain is hard to understand especially if you aren't the one suffering from it.
A person suffering from a chronic pain really doesn't have an idea of the strain that is put on everyone they love. But can they help it? Sometimes, but most often not.
It is so consuming, and it affects their actions, motivation, and much of their every thought. Pain is the most misunderstood ailment there is. Because it can't be seen, it is most often assumed there isn't a problem.
Generally, family members catch the brunt of the anger that is brought on from the pain. Fighting pain takes everything you have in you to just get through the day. Most often, the pain sufferer doesn't understand what they are doing and the stress they are inflicting. This is when the family unit is most important and support is needed.
Dealing with any sort of long term pain is very difficult. No one wants to be a burden on anyone else. No one wants to be irritable all the time. Try to put yourself in their place. If, they could change things they certainly would.
In many family situations, that is how they lash out at the pain. They are not intending to hurt the ones they love, but you are there and an easy target.
Wouldn't it be great to have all the answers? Why did this have
to happen to our family? What can we do to help? Listen, to start with. Try to understand how the sufferer feels. Pain is agony!
Is there something we can do to help the family member we love to cope as well as can be expected? Yes there is.
You see... My name is Helen Fordham and I have been living with
a chronic pain sufferer for more than thirteen years. He has tried nearly everything for relief. Medication, shots, nerve endings burned, tens units,(yes, burned up two of them) and much, much more. Finally, a pain pump put in to receive the medication directly to the source of the pain. This has been the most successful treatment, giving him back a somewhat normal life.
