What is Chronic Pain?

The Understanding of How it Works.

What is chronic pain? A pain that just goes on and on, day after day, with no let up. It consumes your every thought, your entire being. Nothing hardly can enter your mind but getting this beast under control. Control is what the chronic pain sufferer is seeking and nothing else.

I am sure you have read about the history of chronic pain. That is all well and good, but to really understand what chronic pain is, you need to talk to someone that is experiencing it. If the chronic pain isn’t managed properly there is no relief in sight.

For an example, lets say you have a very bad headache. You try the usual medication to get rid of it. It doesn’t work. You take more and still no relief. Now the headache has gone into day two and it is still there with a vengeance. Nothing seems to ease it although you have tried everything you know of. You feel if you don’t get some relief soon you will not be able to stand it anymore.

Now, you are beginning to understanding what chronic pain is about.

Say this headache goes on for many more days with no let up. Of course you will want to go to the doctor to get some relief. The doctor tells you that there isn’t much they can do for it and that it will take years for them to run tests, x-rays, MRI's, scans and many other tests. They have given you medication for the headache, but it isn’t helping. You think, will I have to live with this horrible pain the rest of my life. The doctors answer is a resounding, yes.

Treatment for chronic pain can take some time to find just the right treatment that works for you. In the meantime, you have to accept what fate has dealt you.

You are in agony. You are willing to do just about anything for relief of this pain.

You think, there must be something that the doctor has missed for the diagnosis. You try many different medications, some help others do nothing. Still the horrible headache persist.

This is a sample of just what chronic pain really is like. You are desperate for others to understand what and why this is happening. They think that you are faking or that you are seeking sympathy because you can’t be hurting for that long and have tried everything the doctor has given you.

Anyone can suffer from chronic pain. Children as well as adults suffer.

So you can now ask yourself, what is chronic pain, a pain that encompasses ones life for a lifetime.
